Obama the Socialist?
Last weekend Mitt Romney’s campaign held a series of high end fund raisers along the East Hampton shore of New York. In reading the coverage of these events by Michael Barbaro and Sarah Wheaton, in the NY Times, I ran across this paragraph,
A few cars back, Ted Conklin, the owner of the American Hotel in Sag Harbor, N.Y., long a favorite of the well-off and well-known in the Hamptons, could barely contain his displeasure with Mr. Obama. “He is a socialist. His idea is find a problem that doesn’t exist and get government to intervene,” Mr. Conklin said from inside a gold-colored Mercedes as his wife, Carol Simmons, nodded in agreement.
I shook my head and thought, they don’t even understand the meaning of the word ‘socialist’ yet they (read Obama haters) toss it around like it’s common knowledge. What’s discouraging is that Ted Conklin and Carol Simmons should know better. Obviously they are educated, successful people living the good life but they don’t understand the difference between a social safety net and socialism as practiced by Marx and Lenin? This is obviously what happens to smart people fed an unending diet of hate by Fox News.
The following day I read an excellent explanationof socialism by a person who’s lived under the regime, the extraordinarily talented movie director Milos Forman.

Thanks, Mr. Forman, too bad Ted Conklin and Carol Simmons missed this because it was published in that liberal rag, The New York Times.
Here’s what happens when the 1% serve the 1% in our society…

The Day After the Recall
It’s the day after the Wisconsin recall vote and the Democratic candidate lost…the sun did come up today however. The realization that this upcoming presidential election won’t be a cake walk has begun to settle in and it feels like I’m wearing a damp coat of gloom. I had the chance to volunteer at a booth for Democratic Women at Greenville’s Saturday Market and as I was chatting up the crowd and encouraging one young couple to register to vote, the young woman pessimistically told me that there was no sense in voting since there were no real differences between the political parties. I didn’t argue with her, that would have been futile but it made me sad and discouraged that she has that belief system.
Listen to the music
On Saturday night Alan and I drove to Atlanta to attend a concert in the Chastain Park Ampitheatre. Michael Franti and Spearhead opened for Steve Winwood. This was our second concert in Chastain Park, last year we saw Jackson Browne which was amazing. The weather was picture perfect and as the sun set we munched on mufelletta’s and salad, while sipping wine. It was the yuppiest crowd I’ve been with in quite some time, lots of people dressed to the nines, their table settings featured fresh flowers, crystal and lots of gourmet take-out. Michael Franti and his band brought the crowd to their feet, wading into the seats, sipping beers, shaking hands, taking pictures with his new fans. He told stories, prompted concert goers to sing along and created an atmosphere of sheer joy. Winwood was in fine voice, a far more subtle and disengaged performance but the quality of his musicians and the level of talent on the stage made up for his cool demeanor.
