Big Egos Big Scandal
I’m still chuckling over the last page of the November 12th issue of Newsweek Magazine. The headline reads, “Petraeus’s Rules for Living” it’s written by you guessed it Petraeus biographer Paula Broadwell.
In case you’re interested there’s no rule in the 12 rules listed by Broadwell that advises not committing adultery with your biographer. The best joke I’ve heard about this e-mail/adultery scandal that keeps expanding by the day comes from David Letterman, “General Petraeus had an affair with his biographer Paula Broadwell, which means from now on he’ll only be having sex with his autobiographer.”
There are so many layers to this story that it threatens to become a soap opera. General John R. Allen, the commander of US and NATO troops in Afghanistan has now been implicated in the scandal.

Kelly is a Florida socialite and big fundraiser for the Wounded Warrior charity. Her friendship with Petraeus and his family angered Broadwell so much that she sent Kelly some anonymous e-mails, which Kelly then asked an FBI agent to investigate. OK, here’s where the story takes another weird turn. The FBI agent, whom Kelly had met socially, then started corresponding with Kelly and sent her some shirtless pictures of himself. What’s the deal on Kelly and for that matter Broadwell, are they so overwhelmingly sexy that men are instantly in their thrall? Of course the ensuing scandal has ignited a conspiracy theory on the right, which Jon Stewart details quite nicely,

Stay tuned for further fallout but General Allen’s appointment as Supreme Commander of NATO has been put on hold pending further investigation. The people I’m most concerned about are Mrs. Petraeus and Mr. Broadwell and their young children. How would you like to go to school or the office while your wife/husband’s pictures are splashed across every newspaper, magazine and TV in the country? Think Mrs. Sanford and children and Elizabeth Edwards and children. For those questioning the morality of these people, I contend that highly successful people have big huge egos that need and often demand to be fed. When you come across attractive women who are willing to stoke that ego clothes begin to fall off bodies and nature takes its course. Sad but true and certainly nothing new.
