Disappointed but not discouraged
I got dis-invited to the Democratic National Convention. The threat of severe thunderstorms, forced organizers to move the venue today from Bank of America Stadium to Time Warner Cable Arena. Sixty Five Thousand of us didn’t get to volunteer and or attend the final day of the Democratic Convention in Charlotte, NC. When I got the news yesterday, I was lower than a snake’s belly in a wagon rut.
My spirits were revived but good last night however by the narratives spun out so brilliantly by former President Bill Clinton and aspiring US Senator Elizabeth Warren. On MSNBC today, Andrea Mitchell kept saying, “President Clinton did a far better job of telling Obama’s story than the Obama administration.” Well…OK but get over it. With Clinton you knew you were going to get a barn burner of a speech but who knew it would be so sharply drawn and so plainly laid out for the American people? He used statistics and talked about policy and had the delegates in the palm of his hand. If you’ve never spoken in public you can’t imagine how difficult it is to attract and retain the attention of a large, live audience. Especially difficult in a party like environment. And yet, Bill Clinton did it and made it look effortless. He’s one of the best politicians I’ve ever seen and all of his brilliance and his charm was on display last night. It made me so freaking proud to be a Democrat. I know that we as Democrats have issues of corporate influence and racism and all the rest but…in terms of public policy, I’ll stand behind the Democratic Party all day long. There is very little about the Republican Party I support these days. The fact that members of the GOP are promoting the notion that our President isn’t a citizen and in some cases he’s called the anti-Christ should be enough to repel any intelligent, independent thinking individual. One would hope. But if that weren’t enough, than last night’s speech should have done the trick. If you are a truly independent, undecided voter than this rational and factual speech by a former president should have clinched the deal. I think people have forgotten or just never understood how serious the economic situation was in 2008-2009. The US economy was on the verge of collapse and our financial markets were in jeopardy. President Clinton clearly made the case that Obama did the very best he could under the circumstances and as a result has created more jobs in the last two years than President George Bush did in eight years.
Tonight, we hear from the big man himself and although I’m bitterly disappointed to not be present in person for the closing speech of the 2012 Democratic National Convention I’ll be cheering from my living room!
