Leaning into Life
I’ve been thinking about life lately. How fragile, fleeting and precious it is. A good friend’s husband is dying of brain cancer; another friend is in the end stages of a four year battle with lung cancer. It just seems so unfair when a good person’s life is cut short. Watching my friend struggle to comprehend her husband’s diagnosis is so painful. It literally hurts my heart to read her daily blog about his life and death struggle. Oddly enough today when I spoke to my friend who has less than 6 months to live, he comforted me saying he was at peace. The blessing of impending death is the peace that settles over the patient once the fear abates and acceptance begins to take over. Death can be joyful at times, that sounds weird but it’s true.
A Communion of CARING Souls
On May 11th and 12th I served as a delegate at CARE’s national conference in Washington D.C. CARE (www.care.org ) is a 60 year old humanitarian organization dedicated to fighting poverty and social injustice. Because of CARE’s special emphasis on investing in and empowering women and children, Dining for Women (a giving circle founded in Greenville, South Carolina by Marsha Wallace www.diningforwomen.org ) has become an affiliate organization. The philosophy behind CARE’s projects in 72 countries is simple; advance education, improve health, increase economic opportunity and meet emergency needs after disasters.
Dr. George Rekers-Homophobe/Hypocrite & Proud Member of the U. of SC Faculty
George Rekers, a Baptist minister who along with James Dobson co-founded the powerful Christian lobbying group Family Research Council, was spotted arriving at Miami International Airport with a companion he hired from a gay escort Web site called RentBoy.com. Dr. Rekers said he hired the prostitute as a travel assistant for a trip to Europe after having had surgery. “I can’t lift luggage. That’s why I hired him,” Rekers said. Photographs of the two emerging from the airport, though, show Rekers pushing both their suitcases on a luggage cart. Rekers said he realized the man was a prostitute half way through his ten day vacation. Rekers sits on the board of the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality, an organization dedicated to changing the sexuality of gays and lesbians, and has authored books that describe homosexuality as a curable condition. Dr. Rekers has testified in Florida and Arkansas as an expert witness in favor of bans on gay adoption. His companion was identified as a 20 year-old Puerto Rican man whose description on RentBoy.com says he is “sensual,” “wild” and “up for anything.” He then lists “vanilla, leather … shaving [and] spanking” among his fetishes and stripping and go-go dancing among his talents.
